What is a hygienist?
Dental hygienists are qualified and trained to work as part of a dental team to provide a hygiene (scaling, polishing and oral hygiene instruction) service to patients. They have a vital role in the within the practice and are focused on every aspect of looking after your teeth and gums. This may include regular professional cleaning in order to maintain the health of your mouth to more intensive gum treatment programmes to stabilise and support patients suffering from gum disease.
How often should you visit a hygienist?
You should have regular professional cleaning to remove plaque (soft deposits) and tartar (hard deposits) a minimum of once per year or more frequently if your hygienist advises it. Having a clean and healthy mouth will result in improved appearance, will give you freshen your breath as well as benefitting your general health by ridding your mouth of bacteria that can travel around your bloodstream.
Will the treatment hurt?
The scaling and polishing of teeth is painless. However, if there is any discomfort then there are anaesthetic creams that can be used or, for more deeper scaling, a local anaesthetic can be administered by the hygienist. Please inform your hygienist if you experience any discomfort during your visit.
