Most people assume that teeth straightening should happen as a teenager as that’s the time when all permanent teeth are out.
However, at Muswell Hill Smile we recommend starting with orthodontic treatments as early as at the age of 6 years.
This is the best time for children to begin once they have been diagnosed with the following:
The reason we are advocates of early intervention or interceptive orthodontics is that research shows how it can avoid future orthodontic procedures that might be more costly, complex and time-consuming.
Orthodontics is not just about improving your smile. Orthodontic treatment improves your overall health by reducing or eliminating malocclusions, which are caused by tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, but on top of that also how you chew, clean your teeth or even your confidence.
A survey conducted by the American Dental Association amongst diplomates on the American Board of Orthodontics showed that their experience also showed that early orthodontic intervention led to “greater ability to modify skeletal growth”, “better and more stable results” and less-extensive therapy later”.
Early intervention performs the same function as interceptive orthodontics and prevents or reduces progression to full-blown malocclusion later in life. It also excludes factors which would interfere with regular development of the dental arches.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. At this point, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.
Early treatment (also known as Phase I) typically begins around age seven or eight. Phase II then begins around age eleven or older.

At Muswell Hill Smile, we use state of the art orthodontic systems for children and young adults.
These range from fully customized braces, lingual braces and Invisalign for teenagers and we are one of a very few practices in the UK offering Myobrace.
Myobrace for Kids™ is a set of three appliances made of flexible silicone, designed to correct poor oral habits and treating upper and lower jaw development problems. Poor oral habits Myobrace helps reduce include mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, incorrect swallowing, and thumb sucking, which are the real underlying causes of crooked teeth. The removable dental appliances are conveniently worn for just 1-2 hours each day and overnight while sleeping.
This is better explained in the following video:
Depending on the diagnosis that our expert orthodontists provide, Invisalign for children can be another effective option that we provide at Muswell Hill Smile. The benefits of this orthodontic system are that the retainers are transparent and removable. This will enable your child to continue with their usual oral hygiene routine, eat and drink as usual and experience less pain or discomfort compared to traditional metal braces. See the Invisalign website for more information.
Early treatment now will give your child a healthy, beautiful smile for the future.
Do not wait and book an orthodontic assessment for your child at your number 1 North London family dentist and orthodontist in Muswell Hill. We will then guide you through everything you and your child need to know.
