Myobrace can be an alternative approach to braces for straighter teeth in children. If the problem is found early this can prevent the need for braces in the future.
Children aged 2-5 are growing extremely fast and therefore can show signs of an incorrect bite and misaligned first teeth. If these early signs continue there may lead to orthodontic and myofunctional (muscle development) problems and become more noticeable as the permanent teeth develop. Orthodontic problems can be caused by habits such as thumb sucking, prolonged use of pacifier, poor myofunctional habits such as tongue thrusting or mouth breathing as well as reverse swallowing habits which can cause the jaws to develop incorrectly and cause crowding of the teeth.
Myobrace for juniors is carried out in three stages and is designed to change poor oral habits which result in crooked teeth whilst treating the upper and lower jaw development problems. The treatment can vary depending on the development of each patient. For the treatment to be success, the brace must be worn daily for 1 hour as well as overnight whilst sleeping and requires regular dentist or orthodontist check-ups to avoid complications. Children are given a sequence of activities to carry out for about five minutes each day in order to strengthen the tongue muscle and correct breathing to help and maintain good new habits.
The treatment consists of the use of appliances to correct myofunctional habits and has proven to be successful in orthodontic correction without the use of braces, as it can lead to better facial development and healthy growth for children.
