Oral thrush occurs when a yeast infection develops on the inside of the mouth and on the tongue. This condition is also known as oropharyngeal candidiasis.
Small amounts of the Candida albicans fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medication can disturb the balance, causing the candida organisms to grow more and become out of control, causing thrush.

Oral thrush can usually be successfully treated with antifungal medicines. These usually come in the form of gels or liquid that you apply directly inside your mouth (topical medication), although tablets or capsules are sometimes used.
