Crowns are caps from metal or ceramic which may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or severely damaged by decay so that a filling can’t replace rest of the tooth or make the tooth or even if temporarily filled it won’t be strong enough long term. A crown due to its ring effect holds together parts of a cracked tooth. Crowns also may be used to improve appearance of teeth. They may be placed to correct misshapen or mask badly discoloured teeth.
