Also known as benign migration glossitis or erythema migrant
This is a common condition, it may appear on the top or on the side of the tongue, we can also found it under the tongue in certain cases.
It may also occur in other areas of the mouth.
This geographic tongue is harmless and benign and is not linked to any infection or cancer.
It affects the middle age or older adults more often and it is more common in women than men.
The cause of geographic tongue is unknown, several factors have been proposed as possible
This state is not contagious and cannot be passed to anyone else.
The symptoms are irregular, smooth red patches on part of the tongue which may include:
Occasionally geographic tongue may cause a burning or smarting sensation of the tongue. This often happens during contact with foods or other substances (for example spicy or acidic foods, hot food, toothpaste)
In most of case these is no need for treatment. Some physicians advise patients to avoid irritants and substances that may sensitize the tongue. A bland or liquid diet, preferably cooled, is perhaps better. Meticulous oral hygiene is important, but care should be taken to preserve proper bacterial balance within the mouth.
